Two new lines worth 421 million euros to Porto metro: Trofa and Gondomar projects have been approved

The Portuguese government has approved two major projects that will expand the public transport network in the Porto metropolitan area.

At the Conselho de Ministros meeting on September 24, **A maximum total investment of 421 million euros for the Trofa and Gondomar lines** was accepted.

When the two projects are completed, approximately 17 kilometers of new corridor and a total of 18 stations will be added to the public transportation network in the Porto region.

However, the entire Trofa project will not be a classic rail metro.

## Trofa line: 184 million euros

Linha da Trofa will extend the existing Metro do Porto network from **ISMAI to Paradela/Interface Trofa**.

Approx:

**10 kilometers length,

9 stations,

Investment up to 184 million euros**

It is foreseen.

The investment is planned to be spread over the period 2027–2031.

## The entire Trofa line will not be a rail metro

Here is one of the most important details of the project for the reader.

The phrase “Metro is coming to Trofa” does not technically describe the entire project.

In the government plan, it is envisaged that a part of the line will be operated with the classical Metro do Porto system, and the **Muro–Trofa section will be operated with the electric BRT/metrobus system on a reserved route**.

Therefore, the Trofa project will be a hybrid public transportation corridor.

## Gondomar line: 237 million euros

The second biggest investment concerns the east of Porto.

New Linha de Gondomar:

It will connect **Estádio do Dragão and Souto**.

Line approx:

**7 kilometers,

9 station**

It will be long.

The maximum investment budget of the project was determined as **237 million euros**.

## Total investment 421 million euros

When 184 million euros for Trofa and 237 million euros for Gondomar are combined, the total maximum investment amount of the two projects reaches **421 million euros**.

It is not correct to say "421 million euros were spent" here.

The figure approved by Conselho de Ministros is the **maximum investment framework** set for the projects.

Tender results and actual costs during the implementation phase will become clear later.

When will the lines open?

The financing and implementation calendar of the Trofa project covers the period 2027–2031.

For this reason, the government decision does not mean that the lines have started construction today or will be opened on a certain date.

The next stages will be the tender, project and construction processes.
