1. Resident and non-resident accounts
Although Portuguese banks may accept non-resident applications, not every branch or product is necessarily open to customers resident in Turkey.
2. Information a bank may require
| Information | Example evidence |
|---|---|
| Identity | Valid passport or accepted official ID |
| Tax number | Portuguese NIF or a legally acceptable foreign equivalent; product practice varies |
| Addresses | Permanent residence and, if different, tax address |
| Occupation/employer | Payslip, employer letter, pension or business evidence |
| Tax residence | Turkish tax ID and relevant self-certifications |
| Source of funds | Statements, sale documents, income or savings evidence |
Banco de Portugal notes that institutions may request further information depending on account type and risk. Unemployment alone should not be a refusal reason; the last occupation may be requested.
3. Branch, remote and representative opening
- Branch: often the most predictable route for third-country nationals.
- Remote: video identification is legally possible, but accepted ID, countries and products are bank-specific.
- Power of attorney: possible where the bank accepts it; obtain the required wording and authority from the bank first.
4. How to compare institutions
| Institution | Verify | Official site |
|---|---|---|
| CGD | Non-resident product, branch documents, current tariff | cgd.pt |
| Millennium bcp | Expat product, country eligibility, current tariff | millenniumbcp.pt |
| novobanco | Conta +351 and branch/online eligibility | novobanco.pt |
| ActivoBank | ID/residence eligibility and app/branch channel | activobank.pt |
| Santander | Account package, non-resident acceptance, tariff | santander.pt |
| BPI | ID, address, product and current tariff | bancobpi.pt |
Check fees in Banco de Portugal’s official, regularly updated tariff database, not in third-party blog estimates.
5. Fees and basic banking services
Opening balance, maintenance, card and transfer costs vary by product. The report’s €100–€500 deposit and €5–€15 monthly ranges are not universal regulated figures.
Serviços Mínimos Bancários: a statutory basic-services package for eligible consumers. In 2026 the overall annual price cap is 1% of the IAS, or €5.37. Eligibility and other-account rules must be checked.
6. Deposit guarantee and fintechs
Eligible deposits with credit institutions are protected up to €100,000 per depositor and institution under the relevant guarantee system. A Portuguese branch of an EU bank may be covered by the home-country scheme.
Wise and Revolut should not be described as legally identical. Check the entity serving the individual account and its current protection statement.
7. IBAN discrimination
Refusing a SEPA transfer or direct debit solely because an account is located in another EU/EEA state may constitute IBAN discrimination. Technical problems may occur, but “PT50 only” is not a general legal requirement.
8. Refusal and security
A bank may refuse a standard account where identity or purpose cannot be adequately verified or AML/KYC duties require it. Basic bank accounts have separate statutory refusal and notification rules.
- Retain source-of-funds evidence.
- Never use a false address or another person’s account.
- Do not share passwords or verification codes with intermediaries.
- Update address and tax residence after becoming resident.
