One address, separate records
This guide helps foreign residents moving within Portugal identify records to check. First arrival, leaving the country or changing tax-residence status may require different procedures.
Do not assume updating the NIF address updates every organisation. A registry address, card information, delivery address and service address can differ. Track two stages: acknowledgement of your request and confirmation of the address actually recorded.
Prepare a small evidence file first
- Write the address consistently, including building, floor, apartment and postcode.
- Record the move date and each contract’s start and end dates.
- Prepare identification, residence documentation and address evidence where requested.
- Check what that organisation accepts: a tenancy agreement, certificate or bill may not be interchangeable.
- Track each family member separately; one person’s update need not update everyone.
Do not upload ID or bank documents to Piti, public comments or unknown contacts. Open official services through their own addresses and share only information required for the procedure.
Finanças: distinguish address from tax status
For people without a Portuguese Cartão de Cidadão, AT states 60 days when tax-residence status changes and 15 days for other address changes. Follow the current AT instructions for your case.
Foreign residents already registered as resident may use Portal das Finanças, Dados Cadastrais → Morada → Entregar Pedido de Alteração, or an appointment. For a non-resident-to-resident update, AT identifies e-balcão or an appointment. An ordinary address request does not necessarily complete that status change.
Complete required confirmation steps and check the resulting registry details or tax-address certificate. The NIF address update guide covers the process in more detail.
AIMA: check the case record and card delivery separately
AIMA directs personal-data changes to its official contact form. Its portal announcement and March 2026 FAQ describe menu labels in different contexts. Do not assume one fixed menu path fits every case: use the current address-correction option applicable to your case.
The renewal portal does not handle every personal-data change by itself. Attach the documents requested through the official contact form; retain the date, reference and acknowledgement. Follow official instructions if a replacement card or additional step is required.
If a first application is pending or a card has already been dispatched, ask AIMA how the change affects that case and delivery. A request acknowledgement is not confirmation that a card will reach the new address. No processing or delivery time is guaranteed here.
Social Security: check your own record
If you are registered with a NISS, review your address and contact information. The official service page confirms foreign registrants can update their records. Cartão de Cidadão holders change the address through the card-address service.
Without that card, use the update channel offered for your account or the Social Security service and check its document requirements. Changing the tenancy contract alone does not update the Social Security record. Review telephone, email and notification settings without unnecessarily reapplying for unchanged details.
SNS: address update and health-centre transfer differ
Ask your registered health unit to confirm the new address and contact details. The health-centre transfer service recommends a transfer to the new area; it is not compulsory.
An address update does not automatically assign a family doctor or move every appointment. If considering transfer, ask the current and receiving units about registration, pending appointments and continuity of care. Do not interrupt medicines or follow-up yourself. See the health-system guide for registration context.
Utilities: close the old address, confirm the new one
Record the old property’s end date and the new property’s start date separately. Changing a billing correspondence address may not change the supply premises or account holder. Water providers can vary by municipality.
Photograph electricity, gas and water meter identifiers and readings with a date. Check final bills, cancellation/transfer references and the new contract’s address. The ERSE meter guide explains energy readings. Do not interfere with technical installations.
For internet, request written confirmation of coverage, installation date, transfer charges, any new commitment and equipment returns. Electronic communications rules provide protection in defined circumstances such as inability to provide the contracted or equivalent service at the new address. Moving is not a blanket right to penalty-free cancellation; verify the notice and evidence requirements for your situation.
Banks, insurance, vehicles and other records
Confirm your bank record and delivery address for cards or codes. Ask insurers how the move affects cover or the insured location. Check employer/HR, school, municipal parking permissions and regular mail senders separately. If considering CTT forwarding, check its scope and duration; forwarding does not replace official address updates.
With a Portuguese driving licence but no Cartão de Cidadão, check the IMT address-notification route. Vehicle owners should also review the DUA record; Justiça’s DUA page lists an address change as a reason for updating the document. Do not forget SIAC for pets. Mark these items only when relevant to you.
Submission and confirmation tracker
Print and fill in this table. Distinguish legal deadlines from your own reminder dates. “Submitted” and “updated” are different stages.
| Organisation | Submission / reference | Updated record confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Finanças | ________________ | ________________ |
| AIMA | ________________ | ________________ |
| Social Security | ________________ | ________________ |
| SNS / health unit | ________________ | ________________ |
| Bank / insurer | ________________ | ________________ |
| Electricity / gas / water | ________________ | ________________ |
| Internet / other records | ________________ | ________________ |
If a form fails, record the date, time and error without unnecessarily including personal data in screenshots. Check official support before repeatedly submitting the same request. Seek advice appropriate to your circumstances if a card, deadline or important notice is at risk.
Final check: is the move recorded?
Ticks last only while this page is open. There is no permanent record or personal-document upload. Ticking is not legal approval.
Sources and method
Official sources checked on 11 October 2026. Institution-specific instructions link to their sources; the tracker, reminders and final checklist are editorial aids. For Finanças we use AT’s specific guidance for people without a Cartão de Cidadão rather than a generalised moving guide. AIMA labels may change, so no single menu path is guaranteed.
