Joana, 2003’ten beri doğanın sunduklarını kişisel bir his taşıyan parçalara dönüştürdüğünü anlatıyor.

Joana Simões Jewellery: a gift search in Telheiras and a warm Lisbon discovery

A chance discovery while looking for a friend’s birthday gift led us to Joana’s studio. We came home with more than jewellery: a little story and a connection to the work behind it.

PTNewsHub · A personal shopping experience

Looking for a birthday gift

Some discoveries do not come from a carefully prepared list. While looking for a birthday gift for a friend, we came across Joana Simões Jewellery by chance. Our aim was simple: to find our friend a lovely gift. But the pieces we found encouraged us to look a little longer, explore the designs and wonder about the person who made them.

We really liked the design, quality and handwork of her jewellery. Sometimes the first thing that catches your eye in a piece is its colour, sometimes its shape, sometimes a small detail. What struck us about Joana’s work was that these choices did not feel disconnected. Behind the pieces, we could sense a distinctive design language and a person bringing it to life by hand.

The birthday was fast approaching, though. We did not have time to order online and wait for shipping. So we contacted Joana through WhatsApp. Our search for a gift, which had begun on a screen, became a little Lisbon discovery: the next day we were at her studio in Telheiras.

In Telheiras, as though we had known each other for years

Right beside the displays, in the space where the pieces are made.

We arrived at the studio with a gift in mind. Joana’s welcome immediately changed the atmosphere of the visit. Although she was meeting us for the first time, she greeted us as though we were people she had known for years. That warmth brought an easy sense of closeness in which we felt comfortable, rather than the formality of a purchase.

The conversation flowed so naturally and pleasantly that we lost track of time. If we had kept talking a little longer, we might even have forgotten why we had come. :) When a conversation carries on like that in a place you have visited to buy a gift, it changes what you remember about the visit. Afterwards, you recall not only the jewellery you looked at, but also the way you met the person behind it.

That is exactly what Joana’s studio became for us. Our visit to the Telheiras/Lumiar area stopped feeling like a shopping errand squeezed between other things to do. It became an encounter in which we could look closely at someone’s work, listen to her and settle comfortably into the conversation.

A few steps beyond the display: the work behind the jewellery

At the studio, we saw more than finished jewellery; we also saw Joana’s working environment. The work desks, hand tools and metalworking equipment a few steps beyond the display cases made the effort behind the pieces tangible. On one side was the jewellery on display; on the other were the tools used to make it.

It is lovely to admire a handmade piece in a display case. Seeing the place where it is made adds another kind of connection. Once you see the desks, tools and equipment, you look at the finished object differently: the link between design and production is there in the same space. That was one of the things we enjoyed about our visit.

That is why our photographs give space to the working area as well as the jewellery displays. The pieces in wooden drawers, the displays on white cabinets, the botanical drawings on the walls and the production equipment together convey the atmosphere of this place. Here, Joana’s handwork is more than a phrase in a product description.

A story that leads from painting to jewellery

Reading Joana’s own story adds a background to the world we saw in her studio. On her official website, she explains that she has always been drawn to the beauty of simple things, expressing that world first through painting and later discovering jewellery as a new creative medium. Nature and small moments in everyday life lie at the heart of this approach.

Joana says that since 2003 she has been transforming what nature offers into pieces that carry a personal feeling. She builds her brand’s story around small details, meaningful moments and the things people want to keep close, rather than a grand claim. The idea of jewellery accompanying everyday life as well as finding a place in special moments stands out in her account.

That background also gives us another way of looking at the drawings we saw on the studio walls. In the section of her official website that brings painting and jewellery together, she describes how line, light and texture connect the two fields. To us, this relationship between jewellery and painting is a lovely key to understanding the coherence of the space we visited.

The same approach appears in the section about Joana’s personal collection: a small detail noticed in everyday life, the transformation of material into form, time and attention. We enjoyed seeing that account alongside the working environment we had visited. We got to know a little more about the person behind the pieces we liked.

Natural materials, stones, metals and the world created by names

We particularly liked the way Joana uses natural materials, stones and metals. It was not only the material itself that drew our attention, but also the way she places it within a design. In the choices of colour, texture and shape, we sensed a coherence that brings different pieces into the same creative world.

Her official product descriptions offer concrete examples of this approach. In the design called Lava, volcanic lava beads meet a sculptural silver element; the piece is offered in sterling silver and gold-plated sterling silver finishes. Nacre is a necklace combining mother-of-pearl, Japanese silk cord and a silver clasp. In one, the texture of lava contributes to the design’s character; in the other, it is the natural lustre of mother-of-pearl.

In the Berry Bloom earrings, inspiration from nature appears in the form rather than through the use of a stone. Joana’s product description presents a sterling silver design inspired by clusters of wild berries in bloom. Nature thus appears sometimes as a material, sometimes as the starting point for a shape.

We also liked the way she organises pieces into collections, gives her designs names that suit their character and makes choices that feel coherent. Alongside rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches, the website offers selections such as “Mãe e Filha” (Mother and Daughter), “Amantes de Livros” (Book Lovers) and “Perfeito para Oferecer” (Perfect as a Gift). These let you explore not only by type of jewellery, but also through a relationship, an interest or an idea for a gift.

Design names such as Roots, Fern Leaf, Olive Leaf and Sea Spiral evoke roots, leaves and the sea. Collection names and individual design names are different things, but looking at them together reveals how small details find their place in Joana’s world. That is what we enjoyed: the connection between the designs, the choices of materials and the names.

Portuguese warmth, added to a gift

What moved us was more than the jewellery we bought. Joana’s handwork, her dedication to what she does and that familiar Portuguese warmth became part of the visit. As we looked for a gift for a friend, meeting the person behind it gave the purchase its own little story.

Part of what we love about buying something handmade lies right there. Sometimes you do not simply buy an object; you go home with a connection to the person who made it, their work and a small story. And that is exactly what we found at Joana’s.

That is why Joana Simões Jewellery did not remain just a brand we happened to find online. It became a studio in Telheiras whose door we stepped through, whose working area we saw, whose owner we enjoyed talking to and which we left feeling happy with our experience. That whole experience is the reason we wanted to share it with PTNewsHub readers looking for an individual gift in Lisbon.

A closer look at Joana’s world

On Joana’s official website, you can explore her collections and products, read her own story and discover the work that brings painting and jewellery together. The brand states that its products are designed and handmade in Portugal. For us, bringing the designs we had seen on a screen together with the working environment we saw in the studio was one of the loveliest parts of the discovery.

If you would like to visit the studio, Joana asks on her official website that you contact her beforehand to arrange a visit to Telheiras. We reached her through WhatsApp and were there the next day. You can begin by sharing your search for a gift, the piece you are interested in or your wish to visit directly with her.

We set out looking for a birthday gift. On our way home, we carried a warm Lisbon encounter along with that gift. Sometimes it is precisely these small discoveries that make you love a city.
