Portugal's food basket experienced the biggest weekly decline of the year

Between 15 and 22 July, the price of the set of 63 basic products dropped by €5.17, bringing the total cost to €251.29. Despite this temporary relief for household budgets, the trend continues to be upward since the beginning of the year. Compared to the beginning of the year, consumers currently pay €9.46 more for the same food products; This corresponds to a price increase of 3.91%. The long-term outlook reveals an even bigger difference: the cost of the basket is €11.34 more than in the same period last year (an increase of 4.73 percent), while compared to January 2022, when the association started tracking these prices, the total cost increased by €63.59, representing an increase of 33.88 percent. Product-by-product analysis reveals that the decline in the total cost of the shopping cart did not prevent sharp weekly price increases on certain products. Last week, broccoli led the way with a 12% increase (to €3.40), followed by ground roasted coffee, up 10% (€4.93), and crustless sliced bread, up 9% (€2.55). Compared to July 2025, the most notable increases were seen in sharp cabbage (up 27% to €1.72), large cod (up 24% to €19.22 per kilogram) and Nile perch (up 23% to €12.21 per kilogram). Looking at the longer term, boiled beef stands out as the food item with the sharpest price increase since January 2022; The price per kilogram reached €12.96, an increase of 123% in total. Second in the historical trend is large cod, with a cumulative increase of 81%, followed by eggs, which increased by 76% in the same period. While the recent weekly decline is a positive sign, the overall cost of food remains significantly above levels observed in recent years.
