finally!! New elevators for Martim Moniz and Intendente

Those who live in Lisbon or visit the city frequently know very well; As fascinating as the steep slopes and historical texture of this beautiful city are, navigating the subway can be equally challenging at times. The metro was always a bit problematic, especially for those traveling with baby strollers, trying to get to the airport with heavy suitcases, or our friends with limited mobility. Finally, truly reassuring steps have begun to be taken in this regard. ### Martim Moniz and Intendente Are More Comfortable Now As of yesterday (Monday, July 27), the new elevators at Martim Moniz and Intendente stations were officially put into use. Two new elevators that go directly from the street to the platform have come into operation in Martim Moniz. A total of three new elevators started to serve in Intendente. With this step, 47 of the 56 stations in the Lisbon metro are now fully accessible. It will not take long to feel this difference, especially for those traveling with luggage and the elderly. ### Praça de Espanha is next The work is not limited to just these two stations. The renovation and elevator works at Praça de Espanha station are planned to be completed by the end of August. In fact, the Metro administration has been carrying out a serious modernization process since 2018. Since then, 42 elevators have been renewed or built from scratch in 15 different stations; 35 escalators and moving walks were also completely overhauled. ### 24/7 Response to Escalator Malfunctions In addition, the constant breakdown of escalators in the busiest stations such as Baixa-Chiado and Airport became a serious ordeal. In May, a new technical maintenance model was implemented for this situation with a budget of 6 million euros, which will last until 2030. There is now a special team on the field 24/7. It seems that the fruits of this new system have already begun to be reaped: Since the beginning of the year, the malfunction rate in elevators has decreased from 33% to 17%, and the malfunction rate in escalators has decreased from 15% to 8%. It is truly pleasing to see such practical and life-making touches in urban transportation on the field.
