Portugal at the table: an autumn food outing in Santarém

If Portuguese food still means mostly bacalhau and pastel de nata to you, give Santarém a day. There is more of the country to meet at the table.

Come curious, rather than for one dish

The Festival Nacional de Gastronomia brings restaurants and producers together, with regional dishes, wine, cheeses and sweets giving visitors several starting points.

Consider a few small choices rather than committing to one large meal straight away. Asking about an unfamiliar product is often a better introduction than scanning a menu and moving on.

Take a look before ordering

The 45th edition runs from 22 October to 1 November at Casa do Campino. NiT highlights wine regions, tastings and workshops, but check the current official programme if you are travelling for a particular session.

Our approach would be a first lap without ordering. See what catches your eye, then choose a few stops. Leave room for something sweet.

Opening times and tickets still need checking

On 11 October the official ticket page was being updated. NiT reports weekday hours of 6–11 pm and weekend hours of 11 am–11 pm; confirm them for your intended visit.

The reported €3 ceiling is a price expectation, not a confirmed admission fee. Some daily programme pages on the official site still carry 2025 dates. Do not mistake old concerts or tasting sessions for this year’s schedule.

Make room for Santarém itself

A short city walk can fit before the food. The official festival website also points visitors towards Santarém’s church route. A few stops followed by an unhurried meal can be enough for the day.

For newcomers to Portugal, a gathering like this lets you explore several regional cuisines in one place. Keep a note of the flavours you like: they might help choose your next trip.
