Portugal’s New Seven Wonders: a seven-stop cultural route across the country

What the selection means

The national final of Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal took place at the Palácio Nacional de Sintra on 12 September 2026. Twenty-one national finalists, three in each category, competed; the highest public vote in each category won. Voting took place by telephone and through the TVI Pass app, and PwC audited the process. Official final page.

“New wonder” therefore does not mean a new state classification or UNESCO listing. It is a cultural project that gives built heritage visibility through a public vote. Seven winners, seven distinct stops

Centro route: Leiria and Óbidos

Castelo de Leiria combines royal buildings inside the complex with views over the city. Check the municipality’s visitor information for opening times and ticket prices before travelling. Visite Leiria.

Aqueduto da Usseira offers a different side of Óbidos beyond its walled centre. Turismo Óbidos describes the PR11 Rota do Aqueduto as 6.2 km, roughly two hours and level II difficulty, following the aqueduct’s source, orchards and views towards Óbidos and the Atlantic. PR11 route.

Alentejo: Roman remains and contemporary wine architecture

Ruínas de São Cucufate, near Vila de Frades, offers a view of a Roman rural settlement and its later historical layers. Visit Portugal’s São Cucufate page.

It pairs naturally with Vidigueira and Vila de Frades wine culture, though archaeological-site hours should be confirmed with Património Cultural. In Estremoz, Tiago Cabaço Winery represents the 21st-century winner and contemporary architecture. Lisbon Cathedral: go beyond the façade

Sé de Lisboa is one of Alfama’s essential stops, with a building history beginning after 1147 and later transformations. The tourist ticket includes the high choir, balcony between the bell towers, Cathedral Treasury Museum, naves and ambulatory. Sé de Lisboa ticket page.

The official tariff lists €7 for adults, €5 with a Lisboa Card, €5 for ages 7–12 and free entry to age six. Tourist visits may pause during worship, and hours vary by season and day; check the official page rather than relying on a time seen at the door.

Olhão: a working market and Ria Formosa

Mercados de Olhão, the 20th-century winner, is connected to fishing and daily shopping rather than being a static photo stop. Olhão Municipality.

A morning visit can give a better sense of the market’s rhythm. Extend the day with the waterfront or connections towards Ria Formosa, but check current operator schedules and weather conditions for boat trips.

Castelo Branco: history in a Baroque garden

Jardim do Paço Episcopal is a key Castelo Branco cultural stop, combining formal planting, water elements and granite sculpture. The municipality highlights it on its visitor route. Castelo Branco Municipality.

Plan the seven wonders without rushing

The sites are spread across the country. Three cultural routes are usually more comfortable than a single fast circuit.

• Lisbon & Centro: Lisbon Cathedral → Aqueduto da Usseira → Castelo de Leiria → Jardim do Paço Episcopal.
• Alentejo: Estremoz / Tiago Cabaço Winery → Vila de Frades / São Cucufate.
• Algarve: Mercados de Olhão → Ria Formosa and the islands.
