Quick answer first
The regime allowing an eligible family member to live with a valid resident in Portugal. An accompanying-family visa filed at a consulate with the main applicant and a later AIMA family-reunification request are not the same procedure.
Who it is for and key distinction
The regime allowing an eligible family member to live with a valid resident in Portugal. An accompanying-family visa filed at a consulate with the main applicant and a later AIMA family-reunification request are not the same procedure.
Financial conditions
The sponsor must evidence adequate resources and accommodation for the family. General weightings use 100% for the first adult, 50% for additional adults and 30% for dependent children/young people; confirm the exact procedure and exemptions in the current checklist.
Category-specific evidence
- Sponsor’s valid residence permit and status
- Marriage, partnership, birth, adoption, custody or dependency evidence
- Accommodation suitable for the household
- Means of subsistence and financial relationship
- Legalisation and translation confirmed document by document
Common document categories
- Application form, valid passport and current photographs
- Travel medical insurance covering urgent care and repatriation where necessary
- Authorisation for Portuguese criminal-record checks and records from required countries
- Genuine and verifiable accommodation evidence
- Means of subsistence and route-specific financial evidence
- Civil-status, birth, custody or dependency evidence for family filings
- Document-by-document confirmation of legalisation and translation
Process from application to residence card
AIMA and residence permit
A national visa is not the residence card. After entry, follow the visa/appointment information and present AIMA with an updated passport, visa, address, purpose/activity evidence and required registrations. Fees changed on 1 March 2026; use AIMA’s current table for the procedure and channel.
For proceedings begun after 23 October 2025, the general rule requires two years of valid residence. A 15-month period may apply to a spouse/partner after 18 months of prior cohabitation. Exceptions cover dependent minors, the other parent of such a minor and families of Articles 90, 90-A or 121-A holders; exceptional reductions are also possible.
Family, work and tax
Applying together and later family reunification are different procedures. For reunification proceedings begun after 23 October 2025, consider the general two-year period, the 15-month spouse/partner rule and statutory exceptions. Work rights depend on status; tax residence follows separate rules.
Presence and renewal
The general cancellation threshold for temporary residence is an unjustified absence of six consecutive or eight non-consecutive months during the permit’s validity. ARI and some special statuses have different physical-presence rules. Renewal may reassess whether the purpose and conditions continue.
Permanent residence and nationality

- Am I using the latest official checklist for the filing country?
- Have I rechecked every amount and fee on the transaction date?
- Do the documents tell one consistent factual and financial story?
- Can accommodation and income be verified?
- Did I confirm legalisation and translation document by document?
- Have I retained updated copies for AIMA?
- Have I assessed family and tax consequences separately?
Frequently asked questions
Does this visa guarantee approval?
No. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee the rest of the file will be accepted.
Must I buy a home?
Generally no. Suitable verifiable accommodation is required; real estate is no longer an ARI investment route.
Does a NIF or bank account mean approval?
No. They may be preparatory steps but are not an immigration decision.
Is the first permit always two years?
Work and general temporary permits commonly use two years plus three-year renewals; student, ARI and special statuses can differ.
Must I spend 183 days each year?
183 days relates to tax residence. Immigration absence rules depend on the permit type.
Do relatives receive residence automatically?
No. Each person needs the appropriate visa or reunification procedure and evidence review.
Must every Turkish document be apostilled?
A universal statement is unsafe. Check the document type and consular instructions separately.
Can I work in Portugal?
Rights depend on status. Do not confuse the visa’s initial purpose with activities permitted after residence.
How long to nationality?
For new general applications after 19 May 2026, Turkish nationals face a ten-year lawful-residence period plus other conditions.
Is a consultant mandatory?
Generally no. Competent advice can be useful for complex investment, tax, corporate, refusal or family cases.
How much is the application fee?
Fees can vary by category and local channel. Use gov.pt and the consulate’s tariff on the transaction date.
How long does a decision take?
The statutory period varies by category; additional scrutiny and workload may extend actual timing.
Is the passport retained during processing?
This depends on local provider practice; confirm before the appointment.
Can the consulate interview me?
Yes. It may request an interview or additional evidence where necessary.
Are savings alone sufficient?
If the route requires regular income, a contract, activity or investment, a balance alone does not replace it.
Is short-term accommodation enough?
Accommodation that does not support genuine settlement and a legal right of use is risky; follow the current local checklist.
Can I reapply after refusal?
Usually yes, but repeating the same file without addressing the reasons is unwise. Check appeal deadlines in the decision.
Does the visa complete the AIMA process?
No. A national visa is the entry stage; the residence-card process is separate.
Can AIMA request evidence again?
Updated or route-specific evidence may be reviewed again; retain current copies of the visa file.
Must I report an address change?
Residence and tax records should remain current; use the relevant authority’s notification method.
When do I become tax resident?
The 183-day and habitual-home tests can both matter; the residence card alone does not decide tax status.
Can I travel in Schengen?
Short Schengen travel with a valid national visa or residence permit follows the general rules.
Are conditions reassessed at renewal?
Yes. Updated proof that the status and required conditions continue may be requested.
Do income thresholds change annually?
Thresholds linked to minimum wage, IAS or average salary can change.
When should I recheck official sources?
When booking, immediately before filing, and again before the AIMA appointment.
