Porto's new security plan has started: First interventions in Pasteleira, Fluvial and Aleixo, suspicion among residents

The Municipality of Porto and the PSP have launched a new application that combines security, social support, health and public space interventions under the same plan in the Pasteleira, Fluvial and Aleixo districts.

The program, called “Plano Especial de Intervenção e Segurança,” covers different areas, from more visible police presence to cleanliness and social guidance. However, a neighborhood association in the Fluvial area finds the measures necessary, but is skeptical about whether the implementation will yield permanent results.

In which regions is the plan implemented?

According to the municipality's assessment, problems related to unauthorized or temporary camping areas, waste accumulation and degradation in public spaces, and people in social and health fragile situations were identified in these areas.

The security and public space interventions began at a time when Porto Municipality was increasing its social support capacity.

Centro Municipal de Pernoita, opened in the city, has a capacity of 120 people. The center provides beds, personal hygiene facilities and breakfast.

The municipality's approach is based on handling the problems of people living on the streets or socially vulnerable people together with social services, health, housing and public space management, rather than treating them only as a security issue.
