A disciplinary process regarding sports betting has been initiated against 26 football players who played for Portimonense Sporting Clube in the 2025/26 season. According to the accusation file reported by Record, it is claimed that some players bet on their own team's matches, even on the defeat of Portimonense SC. The club temporarily suspended the players involved from sporting activities until the process was concluded.
This time, Portimonense Sporting Clube from Portimão, Algarve, is at the center of a remarkable betting investigation in Portuguese football.
The process, carried out by the Disciplinary Committee of the Portuguese Football Federation, covers 26 football players representing Portimonense SC in the 2025/26 season.
According to the accusation file seen by the Record newspaper, it is claimed that the football players participated in sports betting at different levels and, in some cases, bet on their own team's matches.
The process has not been concluded yet.
Charges have been reported to 26 players and players have the right to present their defence. The Disciplinary Board will make its final decision from now on.
Portimonense SAD is not a party to this file
There is a particularly important distinction here.
The investigation concerns Portimonense Sporting Clube's club team, which competes in the Campeonato de Portugal in the 2025/26 season.
Portimonense Futebol SAD, the professional football organization competing in the Portuguese second league, is a separate legal structure and is not a party to the current disciplinary file.
"Futebol SAD" and "Futebol PSC" activities are shown separately on Portimonense's official website.
This distinction is important so that the news is not misunderstood as meaning that 26 players of the professional second league team are being investigated.
Some players allegedly bet on their own team's defeat
The most striking allegations in the file concern the bets some football players allegedly placed on Portimonense SC's own matches.
According to Record, former Portimonense SC player Nuno Pereira is alleged to have made a total of 1,536 sports bets.
It is claimed that 195 of these were related to Campeonato de Portugal matches, 22 were related to Portimonense SC's own matches, and 18 of these 22 bets were on the team's defeat.
Another file is about 22-year-old goalkeeper Rodrigo Carvalho.
Carvalho made a total of 915 bets; It is claimed that 211 of these are linked to Campeonato de Portugal matches and 32 to Portimonense SC matches.
According to Record, 20 of these 32 bets were bets on Portimonense SC to lose.
There are a total of 543 betting allegations against 18-year-old Daniel Cunha. It is claimed that 15 of them were about his own team's matches and four of them were bets on Portimonense's defeat.
Gonçalo Correia, Alexandre Pimenta and Afonso Loja are among the other football players mentioned in the file.
As for Afonso Loja, it is claimed that there were five bets on Portimonense SC's own matches and all five were for the team's defeat.
All of these figures are based on the accusations in the disciplinary file; These are not final disciplinary decisions yet.
File approximately 600 pages
According to the information provided by the Record, the disciplinary file consists of approximately 600 pages.
The situations of the players in the file are not the same.
While some continue to play for Portimonense SC, some left the club during the summer transfer window. It is stated that some bets were made after the relevant football players left the club.
Therefore, it is not correct to say that all 26 football players were accused of the same act or a violation of the same severity.
Club temporarily suspends players
Portimonense Sporting Clube released an official statement on September 4 after the allegations emerged.
The club expressed its regret over the developments regarding serious rule violations related to sports betting by some players in the 2025/26 season A team.
Portimonense SC announced that the players under investigation have been temporarily suspended from club-related sporting activities as a preventive measure.
The club also stated that it will fully cooperate with the competent authorities and have zero tolerance for behavior that undermines the integrity of the sport.
It should not be forgotten that these suspensions are not final disciplinary punishments, but precautionary measures taken until the process is completed.
What penalties await the players?
The FPF's current Disciplinary Regulations contain clear provisions regarding sports betting.
According to Article 142 of the Regulation, a football player who directly or indirectly participates in sports betting in connection with an official match may face a fine of between 10 and 50 account units.
If the bet relates to a match in which the player participated or was involved, an additional ban of one to three seasons is foreseen.
The Regulation also considers behavior aimed at manipulating the outcome of a match or part of it to obtain betting profits as a more serious violation.
However, in the current file, the disciplinary process is still at the accusation stage.
It is not possible to say that it is certain that any football player is guilty until the players' defense is taken and the FPF Disciplinary Board announces its decision.
