Foreign direct investment in Portugal reached 6.7 billion euros in the first half

According to Banco de Portugal data, foreign direct investment into the country reached 6.7 billion euros in the first six months of 2026. This amount indicates a change in direction after the net outflow of 200 million euros in the same period of 2025.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) to Portugal reached 6.7 billion euros in the January-June period of 2026. Banco de Portugal data shows a significant recovery in foreign capital inflows, following a net outflow of 200 million euros recorded in the same period last year.

6 billion euros of the total investment consisted of investments in the capital of companies and other organizations in Portugal. This 6 billion euros included real estate investment of 1.7 billion euros. Therefore, the real estate amount is not a separate item added to the total.

In terms of direct recipients of investment, France stood out with 7 billion euros and Spain with 1.9 billion euros. However, it is not a contradiction that these figures exceed the total of 6.7 billion euros. FDI is calculated on net flows; The 4.6 billion euro decrease in investment originating from Luxembourg offset some of the increases originating from France and Spain.

As of the end of June, the foreign direct investment stock in Portugal reached 225.1 billion euros. This amount corresponds to approximately 71 percent of the country's gross domestic product.

Data on investment funds eligible for the Golden Visa show a different investment channel. According to information based on APFIPP data, 283 million euros of new contributions were made to these funds in the January-May period of 2026; 94.7 million euros were withdrawn in the same period.

However, the share of the capital coming to the Golden Visa funds in the total foreign direct investment of 6.7 billion euros has not been disclosed separately. Therefore, it is not possible to draw a definitive conclusion about how much fund movements contribute to the overall FDI total.
