Hot weather warning in Portugal increased to 16 regions: It will last until Wednesday in some places

The hot weather, which has been increasing its effect in Portugal since the weekend, has spread to a wider area. IPMA has issued a yellow warning for 16 regions due to the persistence of high maximum temperatures.

The end time of the warning varies by region. While the heat warning ends in some regions on Monday evening, September 21, it will continue in eight regions until Wednesday, September 23 at 18:00.

Which regions are on warning until Wednesday?

According to IPMA's latest update, the yellow hot weather warning continues until 18.00 on Wednesday in the following eight regions:

bragança

viseu

Evora

Guarda

Vila Real

Lisbon

Castelo Branco

portalegre

The warning in Porto, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga is expected to last until 18:00 on Tuesday.

The current warning for Setúbal is until 19:00 on Monday.

The temperature can reach 37 degrees

IPMA's forecast for September 21 calls for generally warm and clear weather on the Portuguese mainland.

High temperatures for the day are predicted to range from around 30 degrees in Faro to 37 degrees in Coimbra.

Night temperatures also remain high in some areas; The minimum temperature in Portalegre is expected to be around 23 degrees.

What is the reason for this temperature?

IPMA associates the temperature increase with the extension of the high pressure area north of the Azores towards the Bay of Biscay.

This atmospheric structure brings warm and dry continental air over the Iberian Peninsula. causes it to move.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain above 30 degrees in most of the country.

What does “yellow warning” mean?

Yellow is the lowest alert level in IPMA's three-level meteorological warning system.

However, this does not mean “there is no risk”.

IPMA issues the yellow warning in cases where risks may occur in certain activities depending on meteorological conditions.

Hot weather requires more attention, especially for the elderly, young children, those with chronic diseases and those who work outdoors for long periods of time.

Fire risk also increased at the same time

Hot weather doesn't just affect daily life.

As of September 21, more than 60 municipalities in 10 regions are at maximum rural fire danger.
