Hot weather alert in Portugal: 15 regions and Madeira are under yellow warning

Even though it is mid-September in Portugal, high temperatures continue to affect. Madeira, with its 15 provinces on the mainland of the country, has been placed under a yellow meteorological warning due to the continuing high temperatures.

While the temperature is expected to rise up to 38 degrees in some regions on Monday, September 14, hot weather also increases the risk of fire.

Which regions are under yellow warning?

According to IPMA data, the high temperature warning covers the following 15 distributions on the mainland:

Viseu, Évora, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga.

Warnings on the mainland are expected to last until 18:00 on September 14.

In Madeira, the yellow warning imposed due to hot weather is expected to continue in some regions until 18:00 on Tuesday, September 15.

The temperature can reach 38 degrees

The lowest maximum temperatures predicted for September 14 are around 28 degrees in Aveiro and Viana do Castelo.

In Évora and Santarém, the maximum temperature is expected to rise up to 38 degrees.

Night temperatures are also high in some regions. The minimum temperature in Portalegre is expected to be around 26 degrees.

Fire danger is at maximum level in more than 50 municipalities

High temperatures affect not only daily life but also rural fire risk.

According to IPMA evaluations, Castelo Branco, Guarda, More than 50 concelhos in the distributions of Coimbra, Santarém, Leiria, Portalegre and Faro are at the maximum rural fire danger level on September 14.

In addition, the fire danger is at a "very high" level in more than 100 municipalities across the country.

It is predicted that very high fire danger in some regions may continue as the weekend approaches.

Temperatures will start to drop starting from Tuesday

Change in the heat wave is expected as of Tuesday, September 15.

IPMA predicts a decrease in maximum temperatures, especially in the coastal areas of the northern and central regions.

The decline is expected to continue on Wednesday in the inner north and central parts of the country and the southern regions.

For this reason, it should not be understood that the current hot weather warnings will continue at the same level throughout the country for a long time.
