The Portuguese Marine and Atmospheric Institute (IPMA) warned against the possibility of heavy showers, thunderstorms and local hail, especially in the interior parts of the country. It is stated that instability in weather conditions may continue until Monday, October 19.
Rainfall may spread to different regions
According to the meteorological assessment made on October 17, rainfall is expected to start in the inner parts of the north and spread to the central and southern regions.
In some places, showers may become stronger in a short time and may be accompanied by thunder.
The possibility of local hail is also among the predictions.
However, this does not mean that every region of Portugal will experience the same amount of rainfall.
Wind and temperature change
In IPMA's assessment, it was stated that wind gusts could reach 70 kilometers per hour in the high parts of the northern and central regions.
A significant drop in temperatures is also expected in the coming days.
Weather conditions are especially important for outdoor activities, long journeys and walks in high altitudes.
What does the yellow warning mean?
IPMA's yellow meteorological warning indicates that weather conditions may pose a risk for certain activities.
It may vary in which district and at what time the warning is valid.
For this reason, instead of just looking at the nationwide forecast, check the current warning map of the region you live in. It needs to be done.
Precautions that can be taken in daily life
In areas where heavy showers are expected, it is important for drivers to be careful about reduced visibility and water accumulation on the roads.
It may also be useful to avoid being in open areas and high places during thunderstorms and to protect vehicles and exposed items in areas where hail is likely.
Weather forecasts are subject to change so check the latest IPMA announcements before travelling.
