10 days full of culture in Portugal: European Heritage Days started with more than 400 events

A major cultural program has started across the country for those looking for a weekend plan in Portugal.

European Heritage Days — Jornadas Europeias do Património — an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, are taking place from 18 September to 27 September in different regions of Portugal with more than 400 events.

This year's theme is "Reviver, resistir, reinventar" — "To relive, resist, reinvent."

Hundreds of events from museums to historical buildings

The program does not only consist of classical museum visits.

Guided tours, historical building visits, workshops, conferences, exhibitions and local cultural events were included in the program in different parts of the country.

The official program published by Património Cultural includes many events from Lisboa to Braga, from Aveiro to Alentejo.

Some programs may also provide the opportunity to explore historical or cultural sites to which access is normally limited.

Most of the events are free

It is possible to attend many events in the program for free.

However, being part of the "European Heritage Days" does not mean that all events are automatically free or without reservation.

Some visits may have quota limitations or advance registration requirements.

Therefore, visitors should check the time, reservation and entry conditions on the official event page before departure.

Continue until September 27 will

The 2026 European Heritage Days Portugal program will last until 27 September.

One of the important events of the closing program will be held on September 26 at Cine-Teatro Florbela Espanca in Vila Viçosa.

Issues such as Vila Viçosa's World Heritage candidacy and sustainability of cultural heritage will also be discussed in the program.
