A section of staff working in general careers in public administration in Portugal are going on a 24-hour strike on Friday, October 2.
The action is organized by public sector unions FNSTFPS, STAL and STML affiliated with CGTP-IN. Unions are demanding improvements in pay and working conditions, especially in general careers such as assistentes operacionais, assistentes técnicos and técnicos superiores.
In addition to the strike, a demonstration will be held in Lisbon, starting at 11:00 in Praça da Figueira and heading towards the Ministry of Finance.
This is not a “general strike” in which all public employees participate.
There is an important distinction regarding the scope of the strike.
The October 2 action is not a nationwide general strike covering all workers in Portugal. Call for a 24-hour strike by the relevant public sector unions affiliated with CGTP-IN for carreiras gerais employees in the public administration.
In addition, STML's preliminary strike notice for Lisboa covers more broadly the staff working in Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and the freguesia administrations in Lisboa.
Therefore, the actual impact on services may vary from institution to institution and depending on the strike participation rate.
What do unions want?
The unions' demands include re-evaluating general careers, increasing wages and recognizing professional qualifications.
Among the demands announced by STML, 15 percent and employee It also includes an interim wage increase of at least 150 euros per head, a review of the Signboard Remuneratória Única, an increase in food aid and the regulation of the special status of some heavy professions.
CGTP, on the other hand, demands that the value of general careers be increased and wage negotiations be initiated in 2026, without waiting for 2027.
These are the demands of the unions; not new wage regulations adopted by the government.
Municipal services may be affected in Lisbon
According to STML's statement, there is also a preliminary strike notice for employees in the Lisboa Municipality and freguesia administrations.
For this reason, it is possible to experience delays or disruptions due to personnel attendance, especially in municipal services.
Effects can also be seen in public services in other parts of the country where relevant unions are organized.
However, it is not possible to say for sure that a particular school, healthcare institution or public institution will close before the strike begins.
The safest option is for citizens to check the current operating status of the public service they plan to use on October 2, from their own institution.
The show in Lisbon is at 11:00
The public action of the unions will start on October 2 at 11:00 in Praça da Figueira.
Participants are planned to move towards the Ministry of Finance from here.
For this reason, in addition to the impact of the strike in Lisbon center on Friday on public services, temporary Traffic and transportation regulations may also need to be followed.
