In Portugal, temperatures rise again in mid-October. The Portuguese Marine and Atmospheric Institute (IPMA) announced that daytime temperatures will exceed seasonal norms in most of the country as of Tuesday, October 13. Temperatures are expected to reach 31-34 degrees, especially in the inner parts of the Alentejo and the Tejo Valley, while cooler weather will be effective in some coastal areas due to fog and low clouds.
Temperatures will rise on Tuesday and Wednesday
According to IPMA meteorologist Maria João Frada's statement to the Lusa news agency, the temperature increase is expected to become especially evident on October 13 and 14.
Daytime temperatures are predicted to range between 24–30 degrees across a large part of the Portuguese mainland.
In the inner parts of the Alentejo and in some points of the Tejo Valley, thermometers may show 31, 33 and sometimes 34 degrees.
These values are above seasonal norms for mid-October.
IPMA notes that a period of warm weather may contribute to heatwave conditions at many weather stations, especially from October 13 onwards.
The situation may be different in Lisbon and coastal areas
The same temperatures are not expected to be experienced throughout the country.
According to IPMA, low clouds, haze and fog may affect the coastal areas north of Cabo da Roca and Cabo Carvoeiro.
In areas where these conditions continue throughout the day Temperatures are expected to remain around 20-22 degrees.
Therefore, while temperatures reminiscent of summer are experienced in the interior parts of Portugal, much cooler weather may be experienced in some cities on the Atlantic coast.
Around Lisbon, temperature differences may occur between the coastal areas and the inland areas.
The nights will be cooler than the days
Despite the increase in daytime temperatures, the weather will remain cooler at night and in the morning.
According to the IPMA meteorologist's statement, night temperatures are expected to vary between 10-14 degrees in many regions.
On the southern coast of the Algarve, night temperatures can be around 15-17 degrees.
This means that even in regions where high temperatures occur during the day, those who go out early in the morning and at night may encounter significant temperature differences.
How long will the hot weather last?
According to current forecasts, high temperatures are expected to continue for a significant part of the week.
IPMA states that there may be a decrease in daytime temperatures starting from Friday or Saturday.
There is also a possibility of showers and thunderstorms in some areas.
However, the meteorological institution emphasizes that this possibility is not yet certain and should be re-evaluated with subsequent forecasts.
What should be taken into consideration in terms of daily life?
Temperatures above seasonal norms, especially those working outdoors, It can affect the elderly, children and people who stay in the sun for long periods of time.
It may be helpful to avoid intense physical activity in the middle of the day, drink enough fluids, and limit time spent in direct sun.
Drivers also need to be aware of the dangers that heat may pose to children and animals left in the car.
Rising temperatures alone does not mean that a meteorological warning has been declared across the country. Regional warnings and daily forecasts can be followed on IPMA's official website.
