Risk of heavy rain and hail in Portugal today: 7 regions on yellow alert

The weather in Portugal is changing noticeably today. IPMA has issued a yellow warning for seven regions of the mainland due to the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and high winds.

Beja, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Guarda and Portalegre are under yellow warning between 12:00 and 21:00 today.

It is expected that there will be heavy rainfall, especially in a short time, and the wind will become stronger during thunderstorms.

Rain may be heavy in some places

The main feature of today's weather change is not that the precipitation is continuous throughout the country, but that it can become stronger locally.

IPMA forecasts state that showers may intensify in a short time in some regions and may be accompanied by thunder and hail.

During storm cells, wind gusts are likely to reach levels of 70–90 km/h.

For this reason, it is possible for weather conditions to change in a short time, especially in open areas and while driving.

The main front is coming Tuesday and Wednesday

Today's rains are the first phase of the weather change during the week.

The cold front due to the low pressure system developing in the North Atlantic is expected to pass through the Portuguese mainland between Tuesday, September 29 and Wednesday, September 30.

During this period, rainfall is expected to become more widespread, especially in the Norte and Centro regions, and to become stronger from time to time.

Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real and Viseu on Tuesday Yellow warnings will also be activated in the regions due to rain.

“Bomb cyclone” not forming over Portugal

The claim that "a bomb cyclone will hit Portugal", which was circulating on social media recently, was corrected by IPMA.

Meteorologically, a low pressure system that will experience rapid deepening is developing in the North Atlantic region to the west of Ireland.

Portugal, on the other hand, will be affected not by the center of the system, but by the atmospheric fronts connected to it.

The result of this will be increased precipitation, thunderstorms and a drop in temperature in some parts of the country.

Risk of sudden rain for drivers

Heavy rainfall in a short period of time may reduce visibility and cause water accumulation, especially on roads with poor drainage.

It is important for those living in the regions where a yellow warning has been issued today and those traveling in the Norte/Centro direction tomorrow to follow IPMA's updated regional warnings.
