Fuel oil is at the top again in Portugal: How much are diesel and gasoline increasing today?

Drivers in Portugal started the new week with a sharp fuel increase once again. Current forecasts for Monday, September 21 indicate an increase of 8.5 cents per liter for diesel and 6.5 cents per liter for 95 octane gasoline.

According to the calculations of Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), if the forecasts are fully reflected at the pump, the average price of diesel could rise to approximately 2,242 euros per liter and gasoline to 2,133 euros.

But these are national average estimates. Since fuel prices are free in Portugal, the actual amount the driver will pay may vary depending on the station, brand and commercial discounts applied.

What has changed since Friday?

According to calculations based on Direção-Geral de Energia e Geologia (DGEG) data, the average price of diesel on Friday, September 18 was approximately 2,157 euros and gasoline was 2,068 euros.

ACP's new week forecast means adding 8.5 and 6.5 cents to these levels, respectively.

ANAREC's previously published estimate had calculated the increase as around 6.5 cents for diesel and 5 cents for gasoline. Therefore, there are differences between the estimates of different sector organizations and the exact price can only be seen through the current tariffs at the stations.

Why is it rising so much?

One of the main factors behind the recent increase is the rise in international oil and refined product markets.

The war in the Middle East and the uncertainties around the Strait of Hormuz put pressure on the global energy market. Developments on this route, through which a significant portion of the world's oil and natural gas trade passes, increase supply concerns.

However, the price seen at the pump in Portugal does not consist only of the price of crude oil. Euro/dollar exchange rate, refining, logistics, distribution costs, taxes and companies' price policies also affect the final price.

How to find the cheapest station?

There can be significant differences between liter prices even within the same city.

DGEG's official Preços dos Combustíveis Online system allows drivers to compare current prices by municipality, fuel type and station.

Especially when a 50-60 liter tank is filled, even a difference of a few cents per liter becomes noticeable in the total cost.
