Fuel prices are falling in Portugal: After the protest of 380 trucks, the sector is at the table with the government today

While drivers in Portugal started the week with a decrease in fuel prices, the excavation and earthworks sector, which protested with hundreds of trucks on Friday against high diesel costs, is meeting with the government today.

Market calculations for the week of September 28 predict a decrease of approximately 5 cents per liter in diesel prices and approximately 2 cents in gasoline prices.

But the real change that the excavation industry is demanding from the government is different from the weekly movement in the pump price: companies want to access the gasóleo profissional, that is, professional diesel regime.

380 trucks were on the road

The protest, which started from Paredes on Friday, September 25, progressed towards Coimbra via the A42, A41 and A1.

According to GNR's final data, 380 heavy vehicles participated in the action.

Organizers announced that 117 companies were represented at the protest.

Industry representatives state that diesel expenses can constitute a large part of the total service cost, especially in companies using heavy construction equipment and trucks.

Government receives industry representatives today

After Friday's protest, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing called sector representatives for a meeting.

The meeting is being held in Lisboa today.

Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz previously admitted that the excavation and earthworks sector was not taken into sufficient account in the government's support against fuel costs.

Main demand of the sector to be included in the professional diesel regime.

This system allows certain commercial transportation activities to reduce some of their tax burden on fuel.

A decrease of approximately 5 cents is expected in diesel prices

According to the latest calculations in the fuel market, a decrease of approximately 5 cents/liter in diesel prices is expected in the week of September 28-October 4.

While the movement in international markets indicates a decrease of approximately 6 cents in diesel prices, the net decrease at the pump is expected to be around 5 cents, with the ISP regulation taking back approximately 1 cent of this.

For gasoline, a decrease of approximately 2 cents/litre is calculated.

Since the fuel market is free, the actual price change may vary from station to station.

All eyes will be on the government meeting after all.

The most important issue of today's meeting will be whether the excavation sector will be included in the gasóleo profissional system.

Among the supports recently announced by the government for the transportation sector, there are mechanisms to cover a certain part of extraordinary fuel costs.

Excavation companies, on the other hand, argue that they need a similar support system due to the nature of their activities.
