It was revealed that 2,937 pensions allocated by Caixa Geral de Aposentações in Portugal between May and August 2026 were calculated incorrectly.
Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho confirmed the technical error in a statement on October 7.
As a result of the error, it was determined that some retirees were given higher salaries than they were legally entitled to.
Salaries will decrease by an average of 93.31 euros
According to the announced data, there will be an average gross monthly decrease of 93.31 euros in the salaries of 2,937 retirees affected by the error.
This is an average amount. It does not mean that every retiree's salary will be reduced by the same amount.
The error arises from the technical parameters of the system used to calculate the pension.
Which retirees are affected?
The issue concerns certain pensions granted by the Caixa Geral de Aposentações in May, June, July and August of 2026.
Therefore, the news does not cover all Portuguese pensioners or the salaries of everyone who retired through the Segurança Social system.
CGA is an institution especially linked to the retirement regime of public employees.
Will overpaid money be refunded?
According to the Minister's statement, in cases where it is confirmed that more payments have been made than legally entitled, the excess amounts will need to be refunded.
However, this does not mean that the entire amount will be collected at once.
The Minister agreed to discuss repayment methods with those affected. stated that it would be evaluated.
Notification sent to retirees
According to the information provided by the Minister, a letter was sent to the affected people about the situation.
For this reason, it is important for those who retired through CGA during the said period to check their official correspondence.
However, no refund should be made based on this news alone; The payment request must be verified through CGA's official channels.
Is it the retirees' fault?
The information disclosed shows that the error was not caused by retirees making incorrect declarations, but by a technical problem in the CGA's calculation system.
However, how to recover the overpayment legally is a separate issue.
The method to be applied in each file should be evaluated according to the applicable legislation and CGA's notification.
