2027 budget talks start today in Portugal: The government first sits down with Chega and PS

The Portuguese government begins today a round of official talks with political parties in the Parliament in preparation for the 2027 Orçamento do Estado.

The first meetings will be held with Chega and Partido Socialista.

The government will be represented in the talks by Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Carlos Abreu Amorim.

First meeting with Chega

As part of today's program, the Chega delegation will be received by the government at 17:00.

The meeting with PS will start at 18:00.

The meetings will be held at Assembleia da República.

The government will then meet with other parties represented in the Parliament.

Cost of living is one of the important items in the budget.

While the 2027 budget is being prepared, fuel prices, food costs, housing and household incomes are among the important topics of political discussion.

PS and Chega have put forward different proposals regarding the tax burden on fuel and basic consumer products in recent weeks.

Finance Minister Miranda Sarmento argued that comprehensive tax cuts, such as reducing the VAT on fuel and re-applying zero VAT to the basic food basket, could lead to a deficit in public accounts.

The budget will come to Parliament in October

The government needs to finalize the budget proposal after party negotiations.

According to the working calendar accepted by the Parliament, the general meeting of OE2027 will be held on 27 and 28 October.

The final general vote on the budget is It was scheduled for November 24.

Commission studies and change proposals will be evaluated between these dates.

Today's meetings do not mean the budget has been accepted

Since the government does not have a majority in Parliament on its own, the adoption of the budget will depend on the votes of other parties.

Today's talks are the first official round of negotiations in which the government will present the outlines of the budget to the parties and put forward the parties' demands.
