The local government front is quite active in Albufeira, one of the most lively seaside centers of the Algarve. Mayor Rui Cristina, who was elected from the Chega party, was taken into judicial process by the Portuguese Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) on allegations of discrimination, hatred and incitement to violence due to the remarks he made during the City Council session.
At the center of the incident is the discussion of social housing projects and municipal lands, which came to the agenda at the council meeting on November 26, 2025.
Housing Debate and Prosecutor's Office Claims
According to the information shared by the prosecutor's office, Rui Cristina stated that the municipality's housing budget would not allocate a share to citizens belonging to the Roma community, and he justified this attitude by claiming that this group did not pay taxes.
The Public Prosecutor's Office argues that these statements are intended to discredit the community, create a disadvantage in access to housing, and create public animosity towards this group. The process moved to a judicial dimension with the complaint of PSD council member Helena Palhota Simões and subsequent official searches at the city hall.
"They Were Political Statements, I Am Being Persecuted"
Responding to the accusations against her, Cristina states that her speech in the parliament should be evaluated in a purely political context. Claiming that he is not targeting anyone, the mayor claims that he is being pressured because he defends equal conditions for everyone.
Emphasizing that she is against the allocation of private housing to a specific ethnic group and that existing social housing should be distributed to all district residents with transparent and fair rules, Cristina stated that she will welcome the judicial process with her head held high.
With the end of the judicial recess, the course of the file will become clear; If there is no request for an additional investigation, the case will be heard directly before the committee in the criminal court.
