Portugal’s richest 10% hold 59% of household wealth, central-bank figures show
New statistics from Banco de Portugal illustrate how rising property values have not enriched every household equally. In the first quarter of 2026, Portuguese households held approximately €1.214 trillion in net wealth. About €714 billion, or 59%, belonged to the wealthiest 10%.
Why property matters so much
For households in the lower half of the wealth distribution, real estate accounts for more than 70% of assets. Among the wealthiest tenth, the property share is below 40%, with company ownership and other financial assets playing a larger role.
A comparison reported by Diário de Notícias found that property, deposits and business holdings of the wealthiest 10% grew by roughly 90% over 15 years, against 25% for the less wealthy half.
What the figures do not mean
Wealth is not the same as monthly income. It is based on assets, including estimated property values, less liabilities. A rise in the paper value of a home does not give its owner an equivalent amount of cash to spend.
Banco de Portugal describes these distributional accounts as experimental statistics. Methodological differences can produce different results from household surveys, but the figures still help explain the financial dimension of Portugal’s housing debate.
