The Portuguese government is preparing new support for rising fuel prices: Taxis and fire departments are also included in the scope

The Portuguese government is preparing a new support package for sectors directly affected by the rise in fuel prices. According to the statement of the Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho, the supports are planned to cover freight transportation, fire departments, social sector and taxis.

The new mechanism is expected to be re-activated on a model similar to the previously implemented supports that ended on June 30.

However, the final amounts and implementation details of the supports have not been finalized yet.

The support package will go to the Council of Ministers

Maria da Graça Carvalho announced that the government is making preparations to restart some supports that were previously in effect.

The plan is expected to be presented to Conselho de Ministros, that is, the Council of Ministers.

Considering past practices, it is possible that the support will be implemented as a payment per vehicle or as a discount/subsidy based on the amount of fuel consumed. However, the exact formula of the new program has not yet been announced by the government.

Fire unions complain about fuel costs

The increase in fuel prices especially affects sectors with high mileage and dependence on vehicle fleets.

Organizations representing volunteer fire brigades in Portugal also warn that rising fuel costs are straining their financial balance.

The problem is only the tools used to fight fires. not. Bombeiros organizations use vehicles for many services, including emergency healthcare transportation and patient transport.

Therefore, the increase in fuel prices is directly reflected in operating costs.

Support for agriculture and fisheries was previously extended

The government recently approved the extension of existing support for agricultural diesel until the end of the year and measures for the fishing sector.

The new package prepared now targets freight transportation, taxis, bombeiros and the social sector.

The real cost of the package, who can benefit from it, the amount of support to be applied per liter or vehicle and the start date will be clarified after the decision of the Council of Ministers.
