Portugal approved a new support package against the fuel crisis: Who will receive how much support?

The Portuguese government has approved new measures targeting families and the road transport sector to reduce the impact of rising energy and fuel costs.

At the Conselho de Ministros meeting on September 24, the financing of the Botija de Gás Solidária program used by low-income families was increased, while an extraordinary support mechanism was created for freight and public passenger transportation companies.

The most concrete decision for families is that the 25 euro support provided for the purchase of bottled gas will continue until December 31, 2026.

25 euro support per tube continues

The total budget of the Botija de Gás Solidária program, which can be used until the end of 2026, has been increased to 5.75 million euros.

Within the scope of the program, eligible economically fragile families can receive 25 euro support for each LPG cylinder they purchase.

However, support is not unlimited.

To a household:

maximum two tubes per month,

maximum of 12 tubes per year

Payment can be made for.

Therefore, the theoretical maximum annual support can reach 300 euros.

Support was initially 15 euros

According to government data, the program has supported the purchase of approximately 337 thousand cylinders since 2024.

After the start of the conflict in the Middle East, the support amount was increased from 15 euros to 25 euros per tube.

After this date, more than 113 thousand cylinders have been supported within the scope of the program.

New support for transportation companies

Second decision: freight and bulk passengers It concerns transportation companies.

The government approved the creation of an extraordinary system that complements the previously established fuel support mechanism.

The new mechanism will allow businesses, especially those more affected by high fuel costs, to cover up to 70% of extraordinary fuel costs in the October-December 2026 period.

However, this statement does not mean that 70% of the companies' entire fuel bill will be paid by the state.

The support will be applied to the extraordinary cost portion calculated according to the references to be determined in the legislation.

It is necessary to separate the decision from the implementation

Conselho de Ministros approved the decision increasing the financing of tube support and the new mechanism for transporters.

In addition, the technical application conditions, calculation method and payment procedures of transportation support will be finalized with the relevant regulations.

Therefore, the next important stage for businesses will be the publication of implementing legislation.
