A new round of negotiations is being held today in the long-standing wage and career debate of PSP and GNR employees in Portugal.
Interior Minister Luís Neves is holding separate meetings with the PSP unions and the professional organizations of the GNR.
At the center of the discussions are the restructuring of careers, the wage system, professional statuses and additional payments.
The talks come after yesterday's protest in Porto
PSP and GNR employees held a joint protest in Porto yesterday.
Approximately 200 police and gendarmerie took a silent march towards Avenida dos Aliados.
The demonstration demanded the reorganization of the wage system, career changes and the completion of the agreement with the government in 2024.
Police organizations want other regulations regarding the career and wage system to be completed after the 300 euro increase in risk additional payment with the 2024 agreement.
Separate additional payment for border units is being discussed
Another topic of the negotiations is special payment for security personnel working on border duties.
The government had previously proposed a special payment of 160 euros to the personnel working in the Unidade Nacional de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras within the PSP and the border units within the GNR, which would increase to 230 euros in 2027.
The scope of today's talks is broader and includes the general structure of the career and wage system.
Career system in PSP and GNR at the table
Organizations representing security forces consider today's meetings as one of the most important stages of the negotiation process.
Particularly the reorganization of wage scales, career advancement, working hours and various additional payments are being discussed.
It will become clear as a result of the talks whether the parties can reach an agreement today.
What is changing today for citizens?
Due to today's discussions, there is no decision to stop PSP or GNR services across the country.
It is possible for citizens to use 112 in emergencies and the existing PSP and GNR channels normally in other situations requiring police intervention.
If the negotiations do not yield results, the protest schedule previously announced by unions and professional organizations may continue.
Therefore, the issue that needs to be followed in the short term for citizens is whether another decision that may affect new actions or services will be announced after the negotiations.
