Blood-chilling Incident in Olhão: Two Police Officers Appear Before the Judge

When we say Algarve, we usually think of sea, sun and peace. However, sometimes, in the shadow of this calm, chilling events can also occur. The trial of that dark incident that took place in Olhão last March, which shocked us all when we heard about it, is finally starting.

At the hearing to be held in the Faro Court on the morning of September 8, two PSP officers in the Olhão unit will be held accountable. The accusation is very serious: kidnapping a handcuffed and defenseless man, beating him and causing his death. The trial is scheduled to continue throughout September.

An Ordinary Report, Events Out of Control

The beginning of the incident actually dates back to an ordinary incident in a local supermarket. Two young Moroccans named Aissa and Hassan allegedly opened and started eating food inside the store while under the influence of drugs and insulted the employees. The interesting thing is that the market manager doesn't even officially complain. However, upon the notice of a customer, the police who were on duty that evening came to the scene.

They handcuff the young people and put them in the vehicle. So far, everything may seem like a standard police intervention. But those officers do not steer towards the police station, but towards a deserted municipal road completely outside their duty area, around Pechão.

The Tragic End That Comes When You Are Defenseless

It is truly distressing to read the details reflected in the indictment. The officers throw Hassan, who fainted on the road, from the vehicle and throw him on the side of the road. They took Aissa out of the vehicle and hit her repeatedly in the head and face with a blunt object while her hands were handcuffed behind her back and she was completely defenseless. Aissa, who struggled for her life in Faro Hospital for 20 days after the heavy blows she received, unfortunately could not hold on to life.

The prosecution's position is quite clear: the officers were well aware of what they were doing, they grossly abused their authority, and they knew that this action could lead to the death of the victim.

It is truly incomprehensible that people in uniform, whom we expect to ensure our security, are involved in such a spiral of violence. We will continue to closely follow how the court process will progress and the decision that will be made.
