Ceiling Collapse in Oeiras Parque: Weekend Storm Also Hit the Shopping Mall

That strange, unusually stormy weather that affected Lisbon over the weekend hit not only the streets but also indoor areas. Yesterday afternoon, while I was shopping or just sitting in the cafe in Oeiras Parque, all hell broke loose. While the maintenance work on the roof was being carried out, the sudden and heavy rain caused the ceiling to collapse at a point where the building could not stand.

The incident took place in a common area used by customers, where the fronts of several shops intersect. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported; Immediately after the incident, the Paço de Arcos fire department quickly intervened and ensured safety. That section was immediately closed as a precaution, a few shops had to temporarily close their shutters, but the rest of the shopping center continued to operate as normal.

The weather conditions in recent days are really thought-provoking; IPMA had already been warning for days. This low pressure system coming from the northeast of the Azores created an autumn-like atmosphere in mid-August. Authorities quickly completed the cleaning and technical evaluation work in the damaged area, and everything was under control. Closed shops will also reopen once safety is confirmed. When the weather is so unstable, we never know what we will encounter.
