Short-Term Maritime Alert in Nazaré: Test Error Appeared, Ban Lifted Immediately

Hearing the news of a swimming ban in a popular seaside town in the middle of summer upsets everyone's morale. Exactly such a panic occurred in Nazaré, Portugal's seaside resort, famous for its giant waves and beautiful beach, but fortunately, the fears did not happen. The swimming ban, which was imposed on Friday morning, was completely lifted just a few hours later when new test results arrived.

Mayor Serafim António explained that the extremely high pollution rate in the first test was entirely due to a measurement or sampling error, and that there was no problem with seawater.

The 8 Thousand Value Dropped to 63 in the Repeat Test

Behind the scenes of the incident is actually a complete laboratory abnormality:

Alarm at First Test: The level of E. coli bacteria in the first water sample taken on August 18 gave an abnormally high number of approximately 8,000.

Precautions as Required by Procedure: Although the municipality was skeptical about the first result, it lowered the Blue Flag and banned swimming in the sea on Friday morning in order not to risk public health.

Return to Normal in the Second Test: In the verification test carried out immediately after, the value was found to be only 63.

No Visible Pollution: Officials confirmed that there was no odor, waste or turbidity in the sea, and the water was running completely clear, as it had for weeks.

Unrelated to Last Year's Sewage Crisis

When Nazaré is mentioned, the problems experienced last summer may immediately come to mind. In 2025, wastewater was mixed into the sea due to a clogged sewer pipe near Praça Manuel Arriaga, the beach was closed three times and more than 100 people were hospitalized.

The municipality particularly emphasized that all northern line pipes in the region were completely renewed in March and that this latest incident has absolutely no connection with old infrastructure failures. With the approval of the health authorities, the beach has reopened and holidaymakers continue to enjoy the sea from where they left off.
