"30 immigrants" alarm in Meco: Police did not confirm the claim of disembarkation

The rubber boat found on the Praia da Foz beach in Sesimbra caused a large-scale search to be launched upon the notice that approximately 20-30 people had landed on the shore. However, GNR and Polícia Marítima announced that as a result of the investigations, it could not be confirmed that a migrant group had landed in the region. The incident started on Sunday, September 6, on the beach of Praia da Foz, near Aldeia do Meco, in the municipality of Sesimbra.

A fisherman informed the authorities about a rubber boat washed ashore. While Polícia Marítima and then GNR were dispatched to the region, the boat was also taken under guard by the authorities.

During the investigation, information emerged that approximately 20-30 people were seen near the beach. This development led to the evaluation of the incident as a possible case of irregular migration in the first hours.

Therefore, it is not correct to describe the incident as "30 irregular immigrants landed on the Portuguese coast" at this stage.

Diário de Notícias also reports that, based on the authorities' statement, the hypothesis that the migrants landed has not been confirmed.

The possibility of drug and fuel smuggling is being investigated

The investigation then turned to a different possibility.

GNR and Polícia Marítima announced that the findings collected at the scene and the investigations carried out were similar to suspicious movements related to drug smuggling and fuel smuggling by sea that they had previously encountered on the Portuguese coast.

This distinction is important: Authorities have not yet clarified whether the boat in question was used for drug or fuel smuggling.
