Recently, luxury watch robberies on the streets of Portugal have become increasingly talked about, but this time the incident ended in a way that resembles an action movie. An attempted robbery in the middle of the day, in full view, ended in death as the victim chased after the attackers.
The incident took place around 13:00 in the afternoon on Rua Cidade de Goa. A well-known real estate investor from the Minho region left a luxury hotel with three people and set off in his BMW brand vehicle. At that moment, four people on two motorcycles followed the vehicle.
They hit him from behind and ambushed him
The tactics used by the suspects were very planned. One of the motorcycles hit the vehicle from behind, causing the driver and passengers to get out of the vehicle. Immediately afterwards, the people on the other motorcycle approached and pulled a gun and demanded the watches and jewelry of the people in the vehicle.
After a short fight, the attackers took two Rolex watches and a gold chain, the market value of which was approximately 100 thousand euros, and started to flee the scene at high speed on motorcycles.
Breathtaking Chase to the Airport Road
What the thieves did not expect was that the victim did not give up. The young driver, known by the nickname "Suíço" (Swiss), jumped into his vehicle and chased the motorcycles.
During the breathtaking chase towards the airport, the BMW crashed into one of the escaping motorcycles. Due to the impact, two people on the motorcycle were thrown onto the road. The passenger who was stuck under the vehicle and sitting behind the motorcycle died at the scene due to the serious injuries he received.
After the accident, the other person driving the motorcycle and his two accomplices on the second motorcycle quickly ran away and lost their traces.
Stolen Watch Found on Him, Police Go After the Gang
The driver of the vehicle, who surrendered after the incident, has been released, but may face a possible charge of "causing death by negligence" after his statement is taken.
Police teams investigating the scene seized one of the stolen watches and a knife from the deceased suspect. The other watch and gold chain are considered to be in the possession of the escaped suspects.
The Judicial Police (PJ) is currently pursuing three fugitive suspects. Initial assessments are that this organized gang is of South American origin and entered the country via Spain only to commit luxury watch robberies.
The fact that similar robberies have recently occurred in Quinta do Lago in the Algarve and in central points of Lisbon has once again brought to the agenda the warnings of the security forces to "do not display your luxury items in public".
