There was literally complete chaos on the Lisbon Metro Red Line this evening. When a main water pipe near Encarnação station burst at around 17:20, the tunnel was suddenly flooded. Due to the severity of the amount of water, flights between Chelas and the Airport were immediately cut off. But the real panic and chaos started right after this point. In one of the trains stuck in the tunnel, a passenger who did not want to wait for hours without knowing what was going on could not stand it and forced the door open. When he exited the tunnel, dozens of people in the train followed him in panic. Noticing people walking on the rails, the metro management rightfully cut off the electricity on the entire Red Line for security reasons in order to prevent a huge disaster. Suddenly, life stopped on the entire line. Fortunately, the other passengers remaining on the train were later evacuated safely by the authorities. After security checks, they reopened the area between São Sebastião and Chelas, but the area between Chelas and the Airport is still closed. At around 20:00, fire crews were still trying to evacuate tons of water from the Encarnação tunnel. EPAL (Portuguese Water Company) teams will work to repair the burst pipe tonight, but the news from the Lisbon Metro is not very encouraging: They cannot even give a clear time as to when the services will fully return to normal.
