Public employees strike on October 2 for wage negotiations

Three unions representing employees in public services in Portugal decided to go on strike on Friday, October 2, with demands regarding wages and career conditions.

Strike call; It was made jointly by the National Federation of Unions of Public and Social Service Employees (FNSTFPS), the Local and Regional Government Employees Union (STAL) and the Lisbon Municipality Employees Union (STML).

According to the unions, the strike covers about 350 thousand people working in the general careers of the central government, local governments and public services in autonomous regions. Unions demand that wages and professional advancement conditions for employees in general careers be improved, that the characteristics of the tasks be recognized, and that wage negotiations start without waiting for 2027.

The call specifically covers employees involved in the daily operation of public services, such as operations assistants, technical assistants and senior technicians. It is anticipated that there may be disruptions in cleaning, garbage collection, school services, social security, municipal services and some administrative units.

The unions are also planning to hold a demonstration in Lisbon at 11:00 on the same day. The extent of the disruption in services will depend on the participation on the strike day and the service plans created by the institutions.
