Tensions Are Completely Tensioned at INEM: Criminal Complaint Dropped by Paramedics

Things never calm down on INEM, the heart of emergency healthcare services in Portugal. While a two-day strike decision has already been made for next month, the real development that escalated the tension was the harsh statements at the table. The Emergency Medical Technicians Union is preparing to file a criminal complaint against INEM President Luís Cabral, who accuses the union of "pursuing secret political purposes".

This statement, which came before the critical reconciliation meeting to be held with the Ministry of Health this afternoon, shows how personal and sharp the crisis has now reached.

Great Risk in Emergency Departments in September

The strike dates put on the table by the union are September 14 and September 28. However, these dates rightfully worry everyone who follows the healthcare system closely.

If we refresh our memories a little; During the work stoppages in the autumn of 2024, there were serious delays in emergency interventions due to the disruption of minimum services, and it was reported that 12 people lost their lives in this process. In order to prevent a similar situation from recurring, all eyes are on the reconciliation steps to be taken by the ministry.

Minister of Health is also a target

The fact that the Chamber of Physicians (Ordem dos Médicos) supports the demands of paramedics in the field by saying "The priority should be the patient under all circumstances" strengthens the hand of the union. On the other hand, the crisis may not be limited only to the INEM president.

The union's legal team also scrutinized the statements made by Health Minister Ana Paula Martins throughout the process; If necessary, legal action against the minister is on the agenda.

On one side of the table there is a demand for rights, and on the other side there is a whole country waiting for answers to urgent calls. If there is no concrete result from the meeting to be held today, it seems that September will be quite painful for the healthcare system.
