42°C is expected in the inner parts: The hot weather will be effective for a short time

According to IPMA, temperatures on the Portuguese mainland will rise by 10 to 12°C in some places on September 2 and 3. The range of 40-42°C is expected to be reached on Thursday in the Tejo Valley, Beira Baixa and Alentejo.

A significant temperature increase is expected in the first days of September on the Portuguese mainland. The Portuguese Marine and Atmospheric Institute (IPMA) reported that temperatures may increase by 10 to 12°C in some areas on Wednesday and Thursday.

The highest temperatures across the country on Thursday are expected to be between 34-38°C. Values are expected to reach 40-42°C in the interior south of Serra da Estrela, especially in the Tejo Valley, Beira Baixa and Alentejo.

Temperatures are expected to remain lower along the coastline. The Southern Algarve coast will be one of the exception regions where the increase will be more limited; An increase of approximately 5-6°C is predicted here on Thursday.

According to IPMA, this is a temporary episode of warm weather. Starting from Friday, temperatures are expected to trend downward in coastal areas and the western half of the mainland. There is no rain forecast; There is also the possibility of dust transport from North Africa in the southern regions.

The temperature increase is associated with the influence of the high pressure area around northwestern Portugal and northeastern Azores and the low pressure trough extending to the Iberian Peninsula.

PTNewsHub evaluation: This increase may be perceived more clearly at the beginning of September, after the relatively cool days of August when high temperatures were not felt constantly. The seasonal forecast published by IPMA for the September-November period indicates that September average temperatures on the mainland may be 0.5 to 1.5°C above normal. This doesn't mean that every day will be equally hot; however, the brief episode of warm weather at the beginning of the month seems consistent with this general trend.

Practical information: The General Directorate of Health (DGS) recommends drinking water regularly on hot days, avoiding direct sun between 11.00-17.00 and postponing intense physical activity if it is not mandatory. More caution should be taken for children, the elderly, those with chronic diseases and those working outdoors; No one should be left in the vehicle.
