Entering the weekend of October 2-4 in Portugal, weather conditions will not be the same in every region of the country.
While calmer conditions stand out in continental Portugal after the recent rainy period, IPMA has orange and yellow warnings in the Azores due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Therefore, the assessment that “the weather is calm throughout Portugal and there are no major warnings” is not correct.
Orange warning in Azores
In the warnings published by IPMA for October 2, different island groups of the Azores were raised to the orange level due to heavy rainfall.
The orange precipitation warning for the Western Group was in effect from 00:00–09:00 UTC on 2 October.
There was also an orange warning for the Central Group during the same time period.
In the Eastern Group, the orange warning covers the period between 03.00 and 21.00 UTC on October 2.
The main risk expected is heavy rain and thunderstorms from time to time.
Warning times are published by IPMA in UTC.
Warnings extend to October 3
The risk of rain does not end completely with the end of the orange warning on some islands.
The yellow rain warning in the Central Group continues until the morning of October 3.
Following the orange warning for the Eastern Group, there is a yellow rain warning extending from the night of October 2 to the morning of October 3.
Therefore, those who will travel to the Azores should check not only the general forecast for the weekend, but also IPMA's current warning hours according to the island group.
In continental Portugal the table is calmer
In continental Portugal, more stable conditions are expected over the weekend compared to the last rainy period.
However, there may be cloudiness and temperature differences between the north, center and south.
For those making weekend plans in Lisboa and its surroundings, the current table does not show an orange rain warning level like in the Azores.
However, since meteorological forecasts can change rapidly, especially in the Atlantic systems, the current IPMA forecast should be checked before weekend travels.
Why can't "weather in Portugal" be explained with a single forecast?
Portugal's meteorological structure differs significantly between the continent, Madeira and the Azores.
Especially the Azores, due to its location in the Atlantic, can be affected by completely different weather systems than continental Portugal.
For this reason, while calm weather is observed in Lisboa or Porto, it is normal for there to be an orange meteorological warning in the Azores on the same day.
The correct summary of the weekend is therefore:
The weather is generally calming in continental Portugal; However, orange and yellow IPMA warnings continue in the Azores due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout October 2.
