Fake Document Scandal in Immigration Processes: 10 Years in Prison for Former SEF Employee

Almost everyone who follows the residence permit and bureaucracy processes in Portugal at all knows very well how difficult and exhausting things are. However, justice was obstructed by a network that exploited these difficulties and made unfair profits through shortcuts. In the case held in Leiria, a former employee of the closed Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraudulently accelerating the legalization processes of immigrants.

The announced precedent decision clearly shows how determined the authorities are against those who try to manipulate the immigration system in the country.

How Did the Network Work?

The investigation, which dates back to July 2022 and is carried out by the Public Prosecutor's Office, reveals an organized structure that has infiltrated the bureaucracy. The operation of this mechanism, which includes two lawyers, a doctor and a former SEF employee, is quite remarkable:

Fake Documents and Reports: In addition to residence documents, employment and rental contracts, fake health reports were prepared to prevent immigrants from returning to their countries.

Customer Redirection: With these fraudulent documents prepared, two lawyers and a Portuguese citizen were taking immigrants directly to SEF service points and personally monitoring their applications.

Exceptional Regime Abuse: Applications were made under exceptional circumstances such as "national interest, public interest or humanitarian reasons".

Rent of Thousands of Euros: It was revealed that more than 150 immigrants, most of whom were Brazilian citizens, paid between 500 and 2,000 euros to this gang in order to obtain a residence permit.

Precedent Convictions from the Court

These illegal activities, especially concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country, could not avoid being caught on the radar of the judicial authorities. In the hearings concluded in July, the sentences came one after the other:

The former SEF employee was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A lawyer from Famalicão, who was involved in the organization, was sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison for aiding illegal immigration.

Another lawyer and SEF official involved in the crime were also convicted, but their sentences were suspended.

Of course, the prolongation or difficulty of the processes cannot be an excuse for anyone. This development is a very important step taken to protect the labor of thousands of immigrants who are honestly seeking their rights and to ensure the reliability of the system.
