GNR stopped suspicious boat on the Tagus River: more than 1,200 liters of fuel were found

In Portugal, GNR stopped a suspicious pleasure boat in the Trafaria area of ​​the Tagus River. A total of more than 1,200 liters of fuel were found in 64 fuel canisters, with five people on board.

Authorities suspect the incident may be linked to drug trafficking. However, available information does not show that drugs were seized on the stopped boat.

The operation was carried out by the GNR's Unidade de Controlo Costeiro e de Fronteiras unit, which is responsible for coastal and border control.

At this stage, it is not possible to say that it is certain that five people committed a crime.

Why is Trafaria important?

Trafaria is located in a strategic area in terms of maritime traffic due to its location close to the point where the Tagus opens to the Atlantic Ocean.

GNR's coastal control units inspect maritime traffic along Portuguese coasts and inland waters as part of the fight against transnational crimes, including drug trafficking.

In the latest operation, the center of the investigation is the stopped boat, as well as more than 1,200 liters of fuel and the second boat, which has not yet been found.
