Fronteira Palace will open its gardens after dark

Palace Fronteira. This 17th-century mansion on the side of São Domingos de Benfica is beautiful by day, but it's set to host a fascinating experience this August. As part of the "Illuminated Gardens" (Jardins Iluminados) event, the famous gardens of the palace will open their doors to night tours on Friday evenings, 14 and 28 August. The Magic of Fountains and Tiles at Night After the daytime heat recedes, walking on illuminated paths is a completely different feeling. The perfect symmetry of the garden looks like a fairy tale, with the sweet corners hidden in between being illuminated at night. Listening to the sound of water coming from ornamental fountains while taking a step is incredibly relaxing. This building, built in 1671-1672 for the first Marchioness of Fronteira, D. João de Mascarenhas, was originally designed as a hunting lodge and country house. Over time, it turned into one of the most vivid examples of aristocratic architecture and landscape art. This place is already famous for its Baroque terraces, magnificent tile (azulejo) covered walls, statues and millimetrically pruned hedges. But let me be frank, seeing them under night lights promises a much more striking experience. Visit Details Evening tours start at 21:00 and continue until midnight.
