Even though the calendar shows September, the hot weather continues to affect Portugal. IPMA has issued a yellow weather warning for seven regions of the mainland today due to high maximum temperatures. The southern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo are also included in the warning list, which also includes Lisbon and Setúbal.
According to meteorological warnings updated by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on the morning of September 7, seven regions in mainland Portugal are under a yellow warning due to hot weather.
Regions where the warning applies:
beige
Castelo Branco
Evora
Faro
Lisbon
portalegre
Setúbal
According to IPMA's current warning, the yellow warning is valid in these seven regions until 21:00 UTC on September 7.
Attention is drawn to the continuity of heat in Faro
IPMA explains the reason for the warning for Beja, Castelo Branco, Évora, Lisboa, Portalegre and Setúbal as high maximum temperature values.
There is a small but important difference in the wording of the warning in Faro. For the central Algarve, IPMA draws particular attention to the continuation of high maximum temperature values.
Therefore, in the Algarve, it is not just about the high temperature during the day, but the continuity of hot weather.
Warning in Madeira will continue until tomorrow
The hot weather is not limited to mainland Portugal.
The southern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo are also under a yellow warning due to continued high maximum temperatures.
According to IPMA's current schedule, the alert here will last until 18:00 UTC on Tuesday, September 8.
The northern coast and mountainous parts of Madeira are at the green level in terms of hot weather in the current IPMA table.
What does the yellow warning mean?
IPMA's yellow level indicates that there is a risk for certain activities depending on weather conditions.
This level is located below the orange and red warnings in the meteorological warning system.
In other words, a yellow warning does not mean that daily life must stop completely; However, weather conditions need to be taken into account, especially during hours when the temperature is high.
PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
The Portuguese General Directorate of Health (DGS) recommends drinking water on hot days without waiting for thirst, staying in cool or ventilated environments as much as possible, and avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 11:00 and 17:00.
DGS also recommends using high protection factor sunscreen, appropriate clothing, hat and sunglasses when going out; He recommends limiting intense physical activities during hot hours.
Precautions are even more important for children, elderly people and people who can be more easily affected by heat.
