Portugal moves medical speciality selection online as doctors warn about untested system
Portugal is introducing a major technical change to the way junior doctors select medical speciality training posts. The computerised system for the 2027 intake begins operating on Wednesday, 21 October. The first group of 140 doctors will start choosing places, with 2,449 applicants in the overall process.
Why the medical profession is concerned
The Portuguese Medical Association and professional representatives have questioned whether the system was adequately tested. They sought a postponement over the summer, but the request was rejected. The association argues that the first live selection will effectively test the platform in real conditions.
That warning is not proof that the system will fail. The concern is whether transparent safeguards exist to protect applicants if technical problems affect access, ranking or confirmation of choices.
Why the process matters for healthcare
Filling training places accurately and on schedule affects the future medical workforce. The start of the selection procedure does not, however, mean that current hospital appointments or staffing have changed overnight.
Applicants should follow official deadlines and retain records of submissions and confirmations. The number of unfilled posts will only become clear later in the process.
