Diesel rises 4.5 cents a litre as petrol falls 1.5 cents

Diesel in Portugal is expected to rise by 4.5 cents per litre during the week beginning 19 October, while petrol is forecast to fall by 1.5 cents. Weekly fuel-price changes are generally applied at the start of the week, but the amount motorists pay at the pump can vary by filling station. Drivers should therefore check the current price at their chosen station rather than assume the projected national change applies uniformly.
The report’s longer-term comparison puts the average diesel price at about €1.20 a litre in January 2021 and petrol at €1.45. The cumulative increase over five years has exceeded 80% for diesel and reached about 45% for petrol. Those figures compare with the 2021 starting point; they are not the current pump prices.
A weekly change alone does not determine a household’s or business’s fuel budget. Retailers set their own prices, while the quantity purchased, vehicle efficiency and distance travelled all affect actual costs. For diesel users, the expected 4.5-cent rise means paying more for the same quantity; petrol motorists may see a modest reduction from the 1.5-cent fall. The longer-term movement in both fuels should be considered separately from these week-to-week fluctuations.
Recent fuel-price movements are being viewed in the context of economic conditions shaped by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. That is broad context, not a formula assigning each weekly change to one cause. For a current comparison, motorists need to check the displayed price per litre before filling up.
