Choose one stop, rather than a packed itinerary

The Centro Nacional de Cultura programme includes free visits and walks. Pick something that interests you and leave time for the neighbourhood around it. Several sessions are already full; free admission does not necessarily mean you can turn up without booking.

Wednesday: inside a historic pharmacy

On 14 October at 10.30 am, Farmácia Barreto hosts a visit at Rua do Loreto 24. Celebrating its 150th anniversary, the pharmacy offers a look at the history of medicines and its laboratory-museum.

At 3 pm the same day, a walk explores Bordalo Pinheiro’s connections with Chiado, meeting at the kiosk in Largo do Chiado. Ask about spaces and register for these activities through crgomes@cnc.pt or 213 466 722. Confirm the language before booking.

Thursday: meet the people behind filigree

On 15 October, Joalharia do Carmo at Rua do Carmo 87B hosts sessions introducing Portuguese filigree craftsmanship. Each lasts 45 minutes, with up to three participants. Times: 10.30, 11.15 am, noon, 12.45, 3, 3.45 and 4.30 pm. Booking is required at geral@joalhariadocarmo.pt. Expect an introduction to the makers and their techniques; the listing does not promise a finished piece to take home.

Two museum options

The GNR Museum offers free admission from 12 to 17 October, opening 10 am–6 pm, with last entry at 5.30 pm.

Carmo Archaeological Museum offers free guided visits at 11 am from 13 to 16 October: Portuguese, Italian, French and Spanish respectively. No English session is listed. Tours last about 30–45 minutes, with a maximum of 15 participants. Register at servicoeducativo@arqueologos.pt. This is a specific guided-tour offer, not a promise of unrestricted free museum admission all week.

Check before setting out

On 11 October, several visits including Lisboa Pessoa Hotel, Grémio Literário and Leitão & Irmão were marked full. Spaces at other sessions are not guaranteed. Confirm your booking, meeting point and language with the organiser; details may change.
