If you are going to Cais do Sodré in Lisbon in August, it would be beneficial to change your plans a little now. Cais do Sodré metro station, one of the busiest points in the city and the main transfer hub for boats coming from across the river and the Cascais train line, is temporarily closing its doors. Within the scope of the Linha Circular works to be opened in the future, the metro station will not be able to serve between 8 August and 26 August in order to modernize the signaling systems and ensure integration with the new line. The station will be reopened as of the morning of August 27. How do we shape our plans during this 20-day period, what are our alternatives? Let's see together. How Far Does the Green Line Go While the Metro is Working? The Green Line does not come to a complete stop when the station is closed. Trains will continue to run between Telheiras and Baixa-Chiado. So when we want to go to the center by metro, our last stop will be Baixa-Chiado. From here we can go to the river bank or transfer points on foot or by alternative vehicles. In addition, the Terreiro do Paço station on the Blue Line is at our disposal as a good landing point close to the river bank in this process. Alternative Ways to Reach Cais do Sodré During this period when the metro is not operating, Carris buses, trams and micro mobility vehicles come into play to reach the region: Trams and Buses: The 15E tram, which runs along the riverside and passes through Rossio, is one of the most practical lines. Also, the 25E tram we can take from Corpo Santo (it is replaced by bus number 774 on weekends) is a good option. Day and Night Bus Lines: During the day, we can use Carris buses numbered 728, 732, 735, 758, 760, 781 and 782. At night or in the early hours of the morning, lines 206, 207, 208, 210 and 736 continue to operate. GIRA and Scooter: Although it is not emphasized in the official statement, one of the solutions that will be most useful to us in the field is pedaling. There are 3 different GIRA stations around Cais do Sodré. The shared bicycles and scooter parking areas in the area, which are offered free of charge especially for residents with a Navegante card, are a very quick alternative to get down from Baixa-Chiado. What's All This Chaos About? Behind this temporary disruption is a very critical project for Lisbon transportation. The goal of the metro administration is to complete the Linha Circular in the first quarter of 2027. With this project, Rato will be connected to Cais do Sodré via Santos and Estrela. With the merger of the existing Yellow and Green lines, a new 2-kilometer line will emerge, making a ring in the city center. Once the work is completed, travel times will be significantly shortened, but until then we will have to be patient with such temporary maintenance and integration shutdowns.
