Brent oil reached 100 dollars again: New pressure for gasoline and diesel prices in Portugal

The barrel price of Brent oil rose above the $100 level again for a short time on the morning of September 9. The rise in Brent, one of the main references in Europe's oil imports, creates a new cost risk for consumers and businesses at a time when gasoline and diesel prices are already high in Portugal. According to ECO data, Brent exceeded the $ 100 mark in the morning hours and was traded at $ 99.83 at around 08.57. This level means that Brent has reached $100 for the first time since July 24.

Brent has risen nearly 25 percent since the beginning of August

The movement in the oil market is not just a one-day jump.

According to market data provided by ECO, Brent prices have increased by approximately 25 percent since the beginning of August. On the morning of September 9, US WTI oil was traded above $94. ECO

At the heart of the rise are conflicts in the Middle East and risks related to critical routes through which oil is transported to world markets.

The increase in security risks around the Red Sea, which has become one of the alternative routes especially after the decrease in flows in the Strait of Hormuz, strengthens the supply concerns in the market.

Why is Portugal following the Brent price closely?

The increase in Brent does not mean that prices at gas stations in Portugal will increase on the same day and at the same rate.

Crude at pump price In addition to oil, refining costs, international product quotations, logistics, distribution margins, euro/dollar exchange rate and taxes are also effective.

However, since Portugal is dependent on oil imports, it may become inevitable that a long-term rise in international energy prices will be reflected in the domestic market.

This effect does not only concern automobile users. The increase in the cost of diesel can also be carried over to the prices of other products through transportation, agriculture, fishing, public transportation and goods distribution chains.

The government is already intervening in fuel

The new rise coincides with a period when the Portuguese government's support to limit fuel prices continues.

The government has recently announced tax relief on ISP, agricultural diesel support and measures for various sectors affected by energy costs.

Therefore, whether Brent will become permanent above $100 is important not only for drivers but also for the state budget.

If the price of oil remains high for a long time, the government may face new costs in maintaining or expanding existing subsidies.

What should drivers keep track of?

Drivers who want to compare fuel prices in Portugal can follow the price and reference data published by the state organization ENSE.

Particularly for drivers who travel high kilometers, liters may be consumed between stations in the same city or region. Even a difference of a few cents per month can make a noticeable difference in the total monthly cost.

The real critical question is not whether Brent will hit $100 for a short time, but how long it will stay at these levels.

As long as supply and transportation risks in the Middle East continue, upward pressure on fuel prices in Portugal will remain on the agenda.
