Parvalorem moves to dispose of €1.8 billion in assets inherited from failed BPN bank

Portugal is entering another phase in the long wind-down of assets inherited from Banco Português de Negócios (BPN). According to ECO, Parvalorem is moving to dispose of around €1.8 billion in distressed loans and property. The vehicle was created in 2010 to manage assets left after the bank’s nationalisation in 2008.

What the operations involve

The publicly available report says a portfolio of non-performing loans with a face value of roughly €1.5 billion has been offered for sale. Certain properties are expected to be transferred to state-owned Estamo. These are distinct operations and should not be described as completed transactions.

The nominal value of distressed loans is not the cash price that a buyer will pay. Without final sale prices and dates, the precise impact on public finances cannot be calculated.

Why the disposal matters

The BPN case illustrates the long financial tail of earlier banking crises. Removing assets from the vehicle may help complete the wind-down, but does not mean that all historical public losses have been recovered.

Final transaction results, valuations and the closure timetable will require confirmation through company or government disclosures.
