Fire in Algarve left 29 people homeless: Children and a baby were also affected

The fire that broke out in the city of Faro in the Algarve region of Portugal on Tuesday, October 13, left at least 29 people living in prefabricated houses homeless. In the incident that took place in the Horta da Areia region, families, including children and a baby about one year old, had to leave their homes. While it was announced that no residents were injured, a firefighter who became ill during the intervention was taken to the hospital.

Where and how did the fire occur?

The fire started shortly after noon on Tuesday, October 13, in the Horta da Areia district of Faro.

According to the statements of the Faro fire brigade, the flames affected two adjacent prefabricated houses and additional sections connected to these structures.

The fire spread rapidly in the structures. Fire crews intervened to both extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other structures in the surrounding area.

Authorities reported that the fire was brought under control at approximately 14.30.

There were 42 emergency response personnel and 16 vehicles at the scene around 15:00.

There are children among those who are homeless

According to initial assessments, at least 29 people lost their shelter due to the fire.

Those affected include several children and a baby about one year old.

It was reported that no residents were injured.

However, one firefighter who experienced exhaustion during the intervention was taken to the hospital.

Faro Fire Brigade Deputy Commander Edgar Gonçalves, He explained that the firefighter's condition was not serious.

Where were families temporarily relocated?

People who had to leave their homes after the fire were first taken to the Faro Municipal Library.

The municipality's civil protection units began assessing the needs of the affected families.

According to Faro Municipal Civil Protection Coordinator Rui Graça, the first option was for families to stay temporarily with their relatives or friends.

Emergency reception and accommodation arrangements were being prepared in the area where the municipal swimming pools were located for people who did not have such an opportunity.

This area was intended to ensure that people could spend the first night with their basic needs met.

However, there is no confirmed statement that all families were placed in permanent housing.

Has the cause of the fire been determined?

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Therefore, there is not enough information to say that the incident was caused by electrical installations, a device or intentional intervention.

The cause of the fire can be determined as a result of technical examinations by the competent authorities.

Likewise, the safety of the structures and whether they can be reused also need to be evaluated.

Why is fire safety important in prefabricated buildings?

Fire safety of prefabricated houses depends on the building materials used, electrical installations, escape routes and It depends on the distance between the buildings.

Adjacent structures and newly added sections can facilitate the spread of fire under some conditions.

However, it has not yet been confirmed that any structural defects or safety violations caused the fire in the Faro incident.

General fire risks and the exact cause of this incident should be evaluated separately.

How will the permanent housing problem of families be solved?

After the emergency response, the most important issue is that homeless families have access to safe and sustainable shelter.

In the first phase, the municipality focuses on temporary accommodation and basic needs.

The scope of longer-term housing support will depend on the needs of families and the social support mechanisms implemented by the local government.

An exact timetable for when the 29 people affected by the fire will be able to settle into permanent housing has not yet been announced.
