When most of us think of Alentejo, that vast calmness and the peaceful view of the Alqueva dam lake come to mind. It's a great getaway spot during those hot summer days in the region. However, this weekend, unfortunately, we received very tragic news from those calm waters that deeply saddened us all.
It Was Just To Get A Ball...
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, around 17:00. 44-year-old Filipe Ramalho was enjoying the beach with his family. He entered the lake to retrieve a ball that had escaped into the water and unfortunately disappeared again. One cannot believe it; Sometimes life can really turn upside down in seconds. Unfortunately, that simple, ordinary effort to save a ball turned into a fatal tragedy.
Search Efforts and the Sad End
Immediately after the notice, Portel Fire Department and GNR teams quickly arrived at the scene. The search efforts, which were forced to take a break as the weather got dark on Sunday evening, started again in the early hours of Monday morning. As a result of the intense efforts of diver teams from Moura, Serpa and Reguengos de Monsaraz, Filipe's lifeless body was found around 11 o'clock.
Local People Are in Mourning
Filipe was actually a person of that region; He was originally from the riverside village of Estrela and lived in Safara. They were a well-known and loved family, as his wife was the president of the union of churches in the region in the previous term. Naturally, this sudden and unexpected loss caused great shock and sadness to the entire local population.
Water is Never a Joke
For those who don't know, since Alqueva beach opened in 2021, it has been a Blue Flag, a very safe place with lifeguards on duty from 9 am to 7 pm, boasting as the largest artificial lake in Europe. In fact, this painful incident was recorded as the first loss of life on that beach.
While visiting holiday destinations, we can easily be deceived by the calm and safe-looking face of the water. This painful incident reminded us, with a heavy toll, how careful we must always be, even in those peaceful waters.
